This Super-Streamlined Kitchen Is Full of Smart Storage Ideas

“The idea was to keep everything super-streamlined,” says Jessica Musumeci of the brief she and her husband, David Curcurito gave Tina Ramchandani when they enlisted her to revamp the small, dated kitchen of their home in Stone Ridge, New York.

“They knew they wanted white-on-white, so we weren’t looking at hardware or a backsplash tile,” says the designer. “It was all about making it seamless.”

In addition to favoring a minimalist look, Musumeci is, by Ramchandani’s account, hyper-organized, so it was imperative to give her space to work in the kitchen without inviting clutter, either visual or literal. “Jessica was the most organized client I have ever had,” says Ramchandani—”she just didn’t have enough space.”

And, as any good designer knows, the best way to optimize space is with strategic organization. So Ramchandani set about devising a custom space where every cooking tool has its place—but virtually nothing is out in plain sight.

“The idea was that all the cabinets and closets would just blend into the walls,” explains Musumeci.

That blending, though, is harder than it looks—and requires precision. “Because it was a small kitchen, the details were super important,” Ramchandani says. Read on to hear how she packed storage solutions into every square inch.

Custom Cabinets and Pantry:

Lower cabinets have drawer pullouts for spices and baking dishes plus hooks on inside doors for kitchen towels.

To make the most of Musumeci’s organizational skills, Ramchandani set her off on the right foot with hyper-customized cabinet storage. “We spent a lot of time really evaluating what she has—if she’s going to buy anything down the line, where does everything go,” recalls the designer. Then, they worked closely with Lauren Park from Intelligent Kitchen to devise cabinetry with room for every last spice jar. “Before we even placed the order, we went through all the feature inserts to be sure that we could get our needs met,” says Ramchandani. They selected a range of elements, including pull-out drawers with glass fronts so nothing gets lost, vertical platter storage, and rolling racks of cleaning supplies under the sink. (Even the toe-kick holds pullout drawers!)

The pantry boasts floor-to-ceiling drawers.

In the rollout pantry, meanwhile, glass-front drawers by Miralis allow for easily finding things. “We’ve all seen pullout pantry drawers before but the way that Miralis does it so they are clear on three sides is just so smart,” Ramchandani gushes.

Hidden Coffee Station:

The coffee station is hidden behind pocket doors.

Since appliances out on the counter was a no-go for the streamlined space, Ramchandani devised a closed-off station for the microwave and coffee essentials. The space is made even more sleek by a special set of pocket doors. “Those were semi custom because, even though typical pocket doors only stick out a few inches, it’s such a narrow hallway that it would be noticeable.” Instead, the doors slide in so that the space becomes a sleek extension of the kitchen, whose cabinetry Ramchandani ran all the way into the adjacent entry for continuity.

Integrated Sink:

The kitchen sink is integrated into the quartz countertops.

Speaking of sleek, Ramchandani integrated the sink into her three-inch quartz countertops, which makes for a continuous line from counter to wall and also camouflages the sink. “We made the sink extra deep so that when you’re sitting at the island you don’t see any dirty dishes,” she explains. Smart, streamlined, and super chic—just like the whole kitchen!
